School Fire Safety Tips

According to the National Fire Protection Association, the top fire causes are: cooking, heating, electrical, smoking, and candles. Fires can disrupt the learning day, destroy property, but most importantly claim lives. Here is a school fire safety checklist that will reduce the chance of a fire and keeping your administration and students safe.

FIRE SAFETY CHECKLIST

  • Conduct expected and unexpected fire drills

  • Be familiar with the nearest fire alarm and extinguisher

  • All occupants need to be familiar with a primary and secondary way out to evacuate the building from the room where they are

  • Evacuation maps should be posted near the exit doorway at a height and location where they can easily be seen (a solid and dotted line or different colored lines can differentiate the normal and alternate paths to safety)

  • Keeping exits clear - they should never be chained, locked or blocked

  • Mindful of decorations

    • Items shouldn’t be hanging from or through ceiling tiles or tile grids

  • Portable electric space heaters can’t be used within 3 feet of combustible material

  • Combustible material cannot be stored within 24 inches of any ceiling (examples below)

  • Multi-plug adapters and electrical power strips should not be connected or used as a substitute for permanent wiring
