PCAL Names Johnson 2014-2015 Statewide Bus Driver of the Year

BDOY-14-15-award-johnson.jpgMANY, Louisiana, February 10, 2015 — Keeping the children safe on his bus is his first and foremost priority. Mr. Robert Johnson has been a driver for Sabine PSB for 26 years, and Monday night at the Sabine PSB board meeting, he was honored for it as the 2014-2015 Statewide Bus Driver of the Year by PCAL.

Mr. Johnson’s demeanor is quiet and it speaks to his strength of character. This is reflected in the many warm and appreciative comments he received in his nominations. “Mr. Johnson’s kind and gentle spirit creates a positive relationship with both parents and students. He is appreciated by all.” Others commented, “My children are very young and I never worry about them when they are in his care. He is always very mindful of their need for special care by strategically placing them near him. He is always concerned about special needs children and situations.” “The best bus driver I have worked with in all my teaching years.”

Now in its 11th year, the PCAL Bus Driver of the Year program recognized eleven Member drivers as their parish’s 2014-2015 Bus Driver of the Year. These awards are based upon multiple driver attributes including Leadership, Attitude, Perseverance, Student and Parent Relationships, and Technical Skill. Of the eleven Parish honorees, two drivers were named 2014-2015 PCAL Regional Bus Drivers of the Year. This designation, reserved for a smaller group of Parish Bus Driver of the Year recipients, represents an even higher level of dedication and accomplishment.

Johnson was presented with a $1,000 check, a personalized jacket, and an engraved plaque from the PCAL Bus Driver of the Year program.

Nancy Pratt of Risk Services of Louisiana and PCAL Representative Emil Studinka presented Mr. Johnson with the award on behalf of PCAL. “Bus drivers set the tone for learning,” said PCAL representative Neil Gately. “The driver is often the first school representative the students see each morning, and the last one they see in the afternoon. Daily, they fulfill a duty that can be extremely challenging, but allows absolutely no room for error. This program recognizes their dedication to the safety of the children in PCAL member schools and to having a positive impact on their education and well-being.”
