PCAL Names Haymon 2015-2016 Statewide Bus Driver of the Year

Kevin Dowdle, Evelyn Haymon, Towanda WillrodtLeesville, Louisiana, December 8, 2015 — For over 20 years, Evelyn Haymon of Vernon PSB has given care, support and safety to Special Needs students in her role as a bus driver and monitor. On Thursday morning, she was named 2015-2016 Statewide Bus Driver of the Year by PCAL in recognition of her extraordinary service.

Now in its 12th year, the PCAL Bus Driver of the Year program recognized twelve Member drivers as their Parish’s 2015-2016 Bus Driver of the Year. These awards are based upon multiple driver attributes including Leadership, Attitude, Perseverance, Student and Parent Relationships, and Technical Skill. Of the twelve Parish honorees, three drivers were named 2015-2016 PCAL Regional Bus Driver of the Year. This designation, reserved for a smaller group of Parish Bus Driver of the Year recipients, represents an even higher level of dedication and accomplishment.

On Thursday morning, Ms. Haymon was presented with the 2015-2016 PCAL Statewide Bus Driver of the Year award. This designation is awarded to one PCAL Parish school bus driver and represents the highest level of dedication and accomplishment.

Haymon was presented with a $1,000 check, a personalized jacket, and an engraved plaque from the PCAL Bus Driver of the Year program.

Neil Gately, Joey Whiddon, Malcom Morris, Evelyn Haymon and Rob EppersRob Eppers of Risk Services of Louisiana and PCAL Representative Neil Gately presented Ms. Haymon with the Statewide award on behalf of PCAL. In addition, Ms. Haymon was presented with a Vernon Parish award. Ms. Towanda Willrodt, Principal of Anacoco High School, spoke about Ms. Haymon’s dedication and commitment prior to Mr. Joey Whiddon, Transportation Director, presenting her with the Parish commendation and a plaque. Principal of Anacoco Elementary School Kevin Dowdle and Malcom Morris, President of Morris Insurance Agency, were also present in support of Ms. Haymon.

When asked how it felt to be honored with this award, Ms. Haymon replied, “Overwhelming. I feel honored and blessed to work with the people, Ms. Willrodt and Mr. Whiddon, among others,that I do.” When asked about her dedication to the safety and well-being of the students on her bus, Ms. Haymon said, “I try to treat the students like my own grandchildren.” Many of the students on her route are Special Needs students, some of whom have behavior issues. Ms. Haymon mentioned that she tries to include the students in different tasks and activities in order to make them feel involved and in order to encourage them.

Ms. Haymon has worked for the Vernon Parish School Board for 22 years, 20 years as a bus driver, after an initial 2 years as an aid (someone who assists the driver by monitoring students). When asked how she plans to spend her award, Ms. Haymon said, “Christmas is coming, so it will come in handy buying gifts for my 11 grandchildren.”

“Bus drivers set the tone for learning,” said Gately. “The driver is often the first school representative the students see each morning, and the last one they see in the afternoon. Daily, they fulfill a duty that can be extremely challenging, but allows absolutely no room for error. This program recognizes their dedication to the safety of the children in PCAL member schools and to having a positive impact on their education and well-being.”
